A female portrait of Liberty is displayed on the obverse. She is depicted with flowing hair and a crown. The inscription “LIBERTY” is engraved towards the top, while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the date appear on the lower half of the coin.
The reverse shows an eagle perched on a ledge against a backdrop of sun rays. The bird is clutching an olive branch and the word “PEACE” appears below. These two design features are what give the Peace Dollar its name. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” also appear on the reverse, along with the denomination of “ONE DOLLAR.”
The Peace Silver Dollar is one of America’s most famous and iconic coins. They have a fascinating historical background, as they were issued to commemorate the end of World War I.
