27mm Air-Tite Coin Holder Direct Fit | Air-Tite $1.99 |
Taken directly from the monument to General William T. Sherman in New York’s Central Park, the obverse features a profile view of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American feathered war bonnet. President Roosevelt insisted that designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens include this headdress. The year of issue is stamped on this side as well.
The reverse features a bold design of an American bald eagle standing proudly atop a bundle of arrows. The country’s name in inscribed above, the coin’s denomination is inscribed below.
The idea for early Gold Eagle coins was imagined in 1905 when Theodore Roosevelt attended an exhibition of ancient Greek coins at the Smithsonian. He was greatly impressed by their artistic beauty and symbolic power, and he envisioned a new, improved generation of American coins that better represented the greatness of our country.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the most prominent sculptor and artist in the country at the time, readily agreed to the job once he learned of Roosevelt’s desire to rework the nation’s coinage. His work led to the Double Eagle $20 gold piece and the Indian Head $10 gold piece, along with other treasured American coins. Saint-Gaudens passed away before he could complete designs for the entire run of American coins, but his finished masterpieces will be treasured for years to come.

"
I first ordered this coin and was sent a low end coin that was not up to my standards So I sent it back and Provident sent me a beautiful replacement coin. The new coin I would say is closer to MS than Au. I'm happy how it worked out in the end."
