History

The Pony Express was conceived in early 1860 as a means of connecting mail and communications service between Missouri, then the westernmost telegraph station in the US, and California. The Pony Express started in April 1860 with 180 stations spaced 10 miles apart along the route. The average Pony Express rider was paid handsomely for the work. Riders earned an average of $125 per month at a time when unskilled laborers made no more than $1 per day and skilled laborers made $2 per day, at best.
