Obverse

The obverse of all 90% Barber Silver Half Dollar coins features a left-profile bust of Liberty. This depiction of Liberty offers masculine features and is done in a Greco-Roman artistic style. Liberty wears a crown wreath and is surrounded by inscriptions of United States of America and a date mark.

Reverse

For the reverse, 90% Barber Silver Half Dollar coins use a modified vision of the heraldic eagle of the United States based on the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle has the heraldic shield of the nation on its chest, an olive branch in its right talon, and arrows in its left. A ribbon through its beak reads E Pluribus Unum and there is a cluster of 13 stars above its figure.

History

The Barber Coinage designs featured the same bust of Liberty on the circulation dime, quarter, and half dollar from 1892 to 1915. The designs were created by Charles E. Barber, 6^th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Barbers designs were not well received at the time and are not considered today to be one of the more sought-after historic US coin designs among collectors.
