From 1795 to 1933, the gold coins of the United States Eagle denomination were the dominant forms of everyday coinage in the United States. These beautiful gold coins were canceled in 1933 amidst the Great Depression and hundreds of thousands of specimens were collected by the federal government and melted down. Surviving specimens are a treat for collectors, especially those with older dates. Provident Metals now has certified 1853 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins available to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase an 1853 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin that was graded Extremely Fine (XF) 45 or better. Coins with this grade may still show some trace signs of the original mint luster, with light wear present on the highest points of relief on the design.
Please remember that Provident Metals offers these coins with the possibility for varying grades of XF45 or better and the possibility of labels from either the PCGS or the NGC. All coins are chosen at random after your payment clears and we cannot guarantee these factors in advance.
Obverse
The obverse of 1853 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins features a depiction of Lady Liberty. This bust of Libertys head comes in left-profile relief and includes a coronet crown that has an inscription of LIBERTY on it. The field includes a semi-circle of 13 stars around the portrait and a date mark of 1853 at the bottom.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 1853 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins is an image of the heraldic eagle. Both designs were created in 1839 by Christian Gobrecht. This version of the heraldic eagle includes a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The US national motto is missing as it was not added to the coins until 1866. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D.
History
The Liberty Head Half Eagle design was used for 70 years in this series, the longest of the five designs that featured on the $5 Half Eagle. The Liberty Head Half Eagle holds another distinction. Though the Liberty head featured on all denominations of the US Eagle, only the Liberty Head Half Eagle was struck at some point during its history at all seven US Mints: Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver.
