In the obverse design of the 1857-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin is Liberty. This design from James B. Longacre was created in 1849 for the release of the very first Double Eagle. It shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown that has LIBERTY engraved on it. Other inscriptions include 13 stars around the portrait and the date of 1857.

For the reverse face of 1857-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins, Longacres Type I design features. This image captures the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield and a ring of 13 stars overhead. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY D.

The Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was introduced in 1849 and would go on to feature on the coins until 1907. The design of the Liberty Double Eagle came from James B. Longacre, who served as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
