The US Eagle denomination was introduced by the United States Mint in 1795 as one of the first major coin programs from the United States of America. The US Eagle Series included $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations when the collection debuted, with the $10 coin known as the Eagle. The other coins were known as the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle, a reference to their face value in comparison to the $10 coin. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1861 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.

The Liberty Head Series within the US Eagle denomination was used from 1838/1840 until 1907, depending on the denomination of the coins it featured on. The Quarter Eagle debuted the Liberty Head design in 1840 and used it until 1907 when the incuse-struck Indian Head design from Bela Lyon Pratt was introduced.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1861 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin is a depiction of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. The depiction of Liberty found here shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head that has the inscription of LIBERTY. The field includes a ring of 13 stars around the bust of Liberty with a date of 1861 at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 1861 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin comes with a vision of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The eagle shown here is clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The US national shield is supported on the chest of the bald eagle. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 2 1/2 D.

History

In 1861, the United States Mint made a minor change to the reverse of the Liberty Quarter Eagle. Known as the New Reverse coin, these specimens had a rounder letter O in the word OF on the reverse, rather than the previous oval-shaped O.
