The classic Seated Liberty Dime, one of the most in-demand coins on the market, is always a welcome addition to a devoted numismatist’s collection. Mint State examples of this dime, which was issued for more than fifty years, can be very elusive: more so for certain years of production than others. Some of the very rarest specimens are uncirculated coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1868, which are estimated to have a surviving supply of no more than forty pieces of Mint State 60 or higher. The team at Provident Metals is pleased to offer the 1868 Seated Liberty Dime for online purchase.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a tamper-proof plastic slab from PCGS, with a label that shows its certified grade of Mint State 62!
  • Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1868!
  • Contains .0729 Troy oz 90% Silver.
  • Face value of one dime issued by the United States of America.
  • Obverse field features an image of a seated Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse field features a laurel wreath.

The 1868 Seated Liberty Dime ships in a tamper-proof plastic slab from the leading coin grading service PCGS, with a label indicating its certified Mint State grade of 62. This describes a coin with acceptable eye quality and an impaired luster, clusters of small contact marks, and the chance of noticeable nicks and hairline scratches appearing in prime focal areas. Provident Metals fully insures each shipment against loss or damage.

Obverse & Reverse

Lady Liberty appears seated on the obverse field, holding a shield with one hand and gripping a wand with the other, a Phrygian cap perched on its end. She is surrounded by the inscriptions “United States of America” and “1868.” The reverse field features an inscription of the face value “One Dime” within a laurel wreath.

History

1868 was one of the most prolific years for the production of the Seated Liberty Dime, with 464,000 coins struck: a total that exceeded the previous five years combined. Despite that abundance, Mint State specimens of this dime became not only extremely rare but also a potential source of confusion even among experts. The coins were struck with a dozen die pairs, one of which was used for both Proof and circulation coinage, introducing some ambiguity as to which coins fell in each category. It is the kind of question that PCGS’ coin grading services were established to resolve, making the certification on this coin a truly valuable asset with dealers.
