History

1868 was one of the most prolific years for the production of the Seated Liberty Dime, with 464,000 coins struck: a total that exceeded the previous five years combined. Despite that abundance, Mint State specimens of this dime became not only extremely rare but also a potential source of confusion even among experts. The coins were struck with a dozen die pairs, one of which was used for both Proof and circulation coinage, introducing some ambiguity as to which coins fell in each category.
