Longacre in 1849, the Liberty Gold Double Eagles feature Longacres obverse bust of Liberty, reminiscent of Christian Gobrechts 1838 bust featured on other denominations of the US Eagle during that era. Longacres reverse design offers a more intricate interpretation of the heraldic eagle inspired by the Great Seal of the United States.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 1878-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin presents a left-profile effigy of Liberty, adorned with a coronet crown and encircled by 13 stars. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1878.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1878-S $20 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin showcase the Great Seal of the United States, featuring a prominent US national shield, arrows of war, and olive branch of peace. A ring of 13 stars above the eagles head includes the inscription of the national motto. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TWENTY D.
History
In 1878, the Liberty Double Eagles circulated across three branch mints, with the San Francisco Mint taking the lead by producing an impressive 1.739 million coins. By comparison, the Philadelphia Mint contributed 543,625 coins, while the Carson City Mint issued a modest volume of just 13,180 coins.
