Highlights:
Each 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin at Provident Metals is thoughtfully encased in protective plastic flips. In Extremely-Fine condition, these coins exhibit light wear on the design’s high points, with some revealing traces of the original mint luster.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, witness the left-profile bust of Liberty, crafted by James B. Longacre in 1849. Liberty graces the coin with a coronet crown and is surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The inscriptions on this side include the word LIBERTY on the coronet crown and 1878 at the base of the portrait.
Reverse
Flip the coin to unveil Longacre’s depiction of the heraldic eagle on the reverse side, known as the Great Seal of the United States. This intricate portrayal features the eagle with the national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. A ring of 13 stars adorns the eagle’s head. Classified as a Type III issue, this coin features the national motto (added in 1866) and a face value noted as TWENTY DOLLARS (changed in 1877). In addition to the face value and national motto, inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
History
Transport yourself to the 1870s, an era shadowed by The Long Depression, a challenging economic phase. The national discourse over the monetary system, particularly the Coinage Act of 1873, significantly influenced the nation’s economic path by demonetizing silver and steering toward the gold standard.
