Known for its remarkable size, silver content, and beautiful design, the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin has been a prized collector’s item for decades. Originally issued across just over a quarter-century between the 19th and early 20th centuries, many strikings of this classic coin became rarities over the years, but some strikings survived in unusual abundance. The San Francisco Mint provided several examples: there were some 9 million silver dollars struck at that mint in 1880, a large percentage of which are on the collectors’ market now, including large numbers of uncirculated “mint state” coins. The team at Provident Metals is delighted to make available the 1880-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, in a certified grade of Mint State 64, for online purchase.
Highlights:
The 1880-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin ships in a tamper-proof plastic container. A label verifies its Mint State 64 grade, indicating that it has scattered hairline scratches, contact marks and scuffs — possibly in prime focal areas — an average strike and luster, and an attractive eye appeal. All shipments are tracked and fully insured against even the most remote chance of loss or damage by Provident Metals.
Obverse
The obverse field features a profile effigy of Lady Liberty in a Phrygian cap, along with the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1880” and a set of thirteen decorative stars at the lower rim.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle clutches a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons on the reverse field, along with the “S” mint mark and the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The signature coin of the age of the Wild West settlement boom was the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, issued between 1878 and 1904 and favored by cowboys, pioneers, prospectors, and outlaws alike. Originally, it was valued for its precious silver content and substantial size, and collectors in later decades came to appreciate the beauty of its overall design. Although the wear of circulation reduced most supplies of the silver dollar considerably over the years — along with the tendency to melt some of them down for their precious metal — there were several years of production at the San Francisco Mint that produced relatively large survival estimates, 1880 included.
