In 1878, the iconic Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced as a replacement for the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar, which had been the first widely used silver dollar in American history. The production of the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar came to a halt in 1873 when Congress ended the free coining of silver. However, in 1878, silver dollar production was rekindled with a new design by George T. Morgan. Right now, you can find certified 1883-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available for purchase online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1883-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available here is delivered to you in an NGC plastic slab with Mint State 65 certification. Coins with a Mint State 65 grade exhibit attractive mint luster, with a few small, scattered contact marks or two larger marks present. Occasionally, one or two small patches of hairlines may be visible.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar, you’ll discover George T. Morgan’s portrayal of Lady Liberty. She faces left, wearing a Phrygian cap, and her head is adorned with both the coronet crown and a laurel wreath. The field also showcases an arch of 13 stars above her head. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1883.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins displays Morgan’s representation of the heraldic eagle. This eagle faces forward with its wings outstretched, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
The New Orleans Mint came in behind only the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint in terms of the production of Morgan Dollars. While the latter two branch mints issued the coins annually from 1878 to 1904 and in 1921, the New Orleans Mint missed only the 1878 and 1921 date marks. In 1878, the New Orleans Mint had not yet reopened following the Civil War and Reconstruction. The mint closed in 1909, meaning it was not operational when the 1921 coin was issued.
