Morgan Silver Dollars are a prized classic coin among collectors and investors, particularly those surviving coins that have an uncirculated grade certified on the standardized Sheldon scale of coin grading. One of the leading third-party coin grading services is PCGS, a standard-setting company in the space who have been authenticating rare coins since the mid-Eighties. Their experts also estimate the rarity of certain kinds of rare coins: for example, Morgan Silver dollars with a Mint State grade of 60 or better have a survival estimate of around 500,000 pieces, making them especially rare and sought-after. A good example is this 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, now available for online purchase from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin comes in a protective plastic slab labeled with its PCGS-certified grade of Mint State 63, meaning an average strike with moderate marks or hairline scratches. Each shipment is fully insured by the team at Provident Metals.
Obverse
The obverse side of the coin features an effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. She is accompanied by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1884,” along with thirteen decorative stars at the rim to represent each of the Union’s founding states.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle clutches a bundle of arrows and an olive branch on the coin’s reverse side. It’s joined by the mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar is an iconic coin of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly identified with the settlers, prospectors, and outlaws of the early American West, among whom its large size and substantial silver contents made it popular. Over the years, these classic coins became increasingly rare as they wore out in circulation or were melted down for their silver contents. This situation partially changed with the discovery of a large “Hoard of Morgans” in the mid-1960s, but one branch of the Morgan heritage that wasn’t as represented in that find were the coins from the long-lost branch mint in New Orleans. These “forgotten” Morgan Silver dollars, produced between 1879 and 1904, remain some of the rarest coins of their kind.
