History
The esteemed New Orleans Mint, established in 1838, marked a significant expansion beyond the Philadelphia Mint, becoming one of the United States’ vital coining facilities. While the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints focused solely on gold coins, the New Orleans Mint produced both gold and silver coins for the American South until the Civil War. After a reopening in 1879, it continued its minting operations until 1909.
