There is probably no more famous series of coins in the field of numismatics than the “Morgan dollar” silver coin, renowned among collectors for its prodigious size, classic visual design, and unusually robust availability in high grades considering that these silver dollars were struck well over a century ago. Originally issued between 1878 and 1904, these coins were produced in large mintages designed to make them a dependable cornerstone of the American monetary system, and they were particularly important to the rapidly growing frontier economies of the American West. The Provident Metals team is delighted to offer this 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin for online purchase.
Highlights:
The 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes in a tamper-proof plastic container with a label to confirm its grade of Mint State 64. Certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this grade indicates an average strike and luster and attractive overall eye appeal, with scattered contact marks, hairline scratches, and scuffs that can appear in prime focal areas. Provident Metals fully insures each shipment against loss or damage.
Obverse
The obverse field features an effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, along with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1904.” Thirteen decorative stars appear at the rim.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle appears on the reverse with a bundle of arrows and an olive branch held in its talons, along with the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 was a response to the sometimes inconsistent production and sporadic circulation of the American silver dollar in prior years and mandated the coining of a specific monthly quality of silver by the Treasury each month. The Treasury’s response to this mandate was to commission the engraver George T. Mason to design what became known as the Morgan dollar. Although many of these coins were lost to circulation wear or simply melted down for their silver over the years, surprisingly large supplies survived into the modern day and became mainstays of the bullion collectors’ market.
