Morgan Dollar Silver coins were issued by the United States Mint from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Over the course of time, the Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, New Orleans Mint, Carson City Mint, and Denver Mint all issued the coins at some point in time. Philadelphia and San Francisco issued the coins every year. Denver only issued the coins in 1921. New Orleans missed only the first and last years in the collection. The Carson City Mint had a more unique coining history.

Obverse

On the obverse field of 1889-CC Morgan Dollars is a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief. This design element includes Libertys head with a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. There are 13 stars along the lower edge of the field, with inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1889.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1889-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design, along with the obverse design, was created by George T. Morgan in 1878. The portrait shows the eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR. The design field features a wreath of oak and laurel along the bottom of the design element, with a CC mint mark beneath the wreath and above the DO in DOLLAR.

History

The Carson City Mint issued Morgan Dollars from 1878 to 1885 and again from 1889 to 1893. The Carson City Mint closed in 1893, bringing an end to local coining in Nevada using sources of silver from the local area.
