One of the all-time classic series in American coinages is the historic and visually stunning “Morgan dollar” silver coin, produced in considerable numbers during a pivotal period in the history of American coinage. These prodigiously sized silver dollars are known for the timeless visual design provided by engraver George T. Morgan, and their production between 1878 and 1904 ensured a steady supply of coinage for the burgeoning economy of the American frontier in the era. Rarity varies depending on the year, but on the whole the Morgans are known for their relatively robust supply in high “mint state” grades, with one example being the 1898 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, presently available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1898 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes in a tamper-proof plastic container so that you can be sure of its authenticity and provenance, and is labeled to confirm a grade of Mint State 64 as certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). That grade specifies a coin with an average strike and luster, attractive eye appeal, and scattered contact marks and hairline scratches that could appear in prime focal areas. Provident Metals fully insures your shipment against even the most remote chance of loss or damage en route.
Obverse
The obverse side features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, accompanied by the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1898.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim symbolize the Union’s founding states.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle appears on the reverse with a bundle of arrows and an olive branch clasped in its talons, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) has been a leading third-party grading service since 1987, whose experts have certified over 55 million coins. Many of these were the famous “Morgan dollar” silver coinage that was created to shore up supplies of silver dollars in the late 19th century and to address prior problems of sporadic circulation and interrupted production. Almost 6 million of these coins were issued at the Philadelphia Mint in 1898, but for decades they were nevertheless relatively rare until the discovery and release of previously untapped hoards in the 1950s and the 1960s.
