The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most prized classic coins on the collectors’ market, sought-after for its rarity and spectacular design and closely identified with the free-wheeling world of the “Wild West” frontier. This is especially true of surviving specimens with a certified uncirculated grade that measures Mint State 60 or higher on the standardized Sheldon scale. A leading third-party grading service, PCGS, supplied the certified grading for a particularly rare Morgan coin that carries the mark of the long-lost New Orleans branch mint, among which uncirculated coins struck in 1900 have an overall survival estimate of approximately 300,000 pieces. This 1900-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is now available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Comes in a protective plastic slab with a label verifying its certified PCGS grade of Mint State 63!
  • Struck at the now-defunct New Orleans Mint in 1900!
  • Sourced from a survival estimate of 300,000 coins!
  • Contains 0.7734 Troy oz of Silver, and is comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Face value of $1 issued by the United States government.
  • Obverse side features Lady Liberty in effigy.
  • Reverse features a heraldic eagle.

The 1900-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin has a PCGS-certified grade of Mint State 63, which indicates an average strike with moderate marks or hairline scratches. It comes in a secure plastic slab with a label that confirms its grade, and the team at Provident Metals fully insures your shipment.

Obverse

An effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap appears on the coin’s obverse, accompanied by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1900.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent each of the Union’s founding states.

Reverse

The reverse side features a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, along with the “O” mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

The New Orleans Mint was a branch of the U.S. Mint that operated between 1879 and 1904. Its issues of the Morgan Silver Dollar are some of the least well-known among collectors — leading to references to them as being the “forgotten” Morgan dollars — but they are especially prized by those in the know, as the remain some of the rarest extant coins designed by the famous engraver George T. Morgan. Most of these coins wore out in circulation over the years or were melted down for access to their precious silver, making surviving uncirculated specimens a particularly valuable investment.
