William Clark and Meriwether Lewis were the leaders of the Corps of Discovery, a group of 30-plus men gathered by Lewis and Clark to explore the vast lands of the Louisiana Territory. The United States had obtained the lands of the Louisiana Territory through a purchase deal with France known, aptly, as the Louisiana Purchase.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Coins is a left-profile portrait of Meriwether Lewis. This design captures the image of Captain Meriwether Lewis of the United States Army, who not only lead the expedition, but also served as the private secretary to President Thomas Jefferson. Inscriptions on this side include LEWIS-CLARK EXPOSITION PORTLAND ORE and 1905.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1905 $1 Lewis and Clark Gold Coin comes with a portrait of William Clark. In this design, Clark is featured in left-profile relief with inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. Clark was a former US Army Lieutenant and the younger brother of Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark.

History

The 1904 introduction of the Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar came with a mintage of 25,000 coins, while the 1905 issue had a mintage of 35,000 coins. The two date marks are the only ones available in this series. A large number of coins from the 1904 and 1905 issues were later melted down in the 1930s, making surviving specimens desirable.

Ordering

These 1905 $1 Lewis and Clark Gold Coins are available in AU55 condition. Coins in this grade are considered Almost or About Uncirculated, with a specific grade of 55.
