The 1908 release of US Half Eagle Gold Coins marked the end of a long era of continuous designing and the introduction of a distinctive new strike type on American coins. The Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin introduced an incuse strike and marked the final image to feature on the coins before discontinuation of the series in 1929. Provident Metals has 1908 Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle 5-Coin Gold Sets available to purchase online.
When you purchase a 1908 Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle 5-Coin Gold Set from Provident Metals, you will receive all five coins inside of individual plastic flips. Each coin has the 1908 date representing the first year of issue for the Indian Half Eagle design. The coins available in this listing come in Very Fine+ condition, indicating that each has medium-to-light wear present with all of the major details still visible. This five-coin set offers you nearly 1.25 Troy oz of actual gold content in total.
The obverse side of 1908 Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins features a depiction of an indigenous figure wearing a ceremonial headdress. The left-profile portrait is struck incuse on these coins and comes with new inscriptions not used on the previous design. Rather than a ring of 13 stars, this design has six stars in front of the indigenous figures face and seven behind the headdress. Liberty is now inscribed at the top with the 1908 date mark at the bottom.
On the reverse field of the 1908 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins, you will notice an American bald eagle. The bald eagle is shown in left-profile relief as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch, combining the images of peace and aggression in a single design. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and Five Dollars.
1908 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins were introduced midway through the year after the US Mint began coining of the Half Eagle Gold Coin denomination with the long-running Liberty Head design. The Liberty Head effigy had been on the coins since 1839, with the Indian Head design ending that nearly 70-year run on the $5 gold coin. The $5 Indian Head Half Eagle was struck by the US Mint from 1908 to 1916, canceled throughout the remainder of World War I and most of the Roaring 20s, with a final release struck in 1929.
