Obverse

The obverse side of 1908 Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins features a depiction of an indigenous figure wearing a ceremonial headdress. The left-profile portrait is struck incuse on these coins and comes with new inscriptions not used on the previous design. Rather than a ring of 13 stars, this design has six stars in front of the indigenous figures face and seven behind the headdress. Liberty is now inscribed at the top with the 1908 date mark at the bottom.

Reverse

On the reverse field of the 1908 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins, you will notice an American bald eagle. The bald eagle is shown in left-profile relief as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch, combining the images of peace and aggression in a single design. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and Five Dollars.

History

1908 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins were introduced midway through the year after the US Mint began coining of the Half Eagle Gold Coin denomination with the long-running Liberty Head design. The Liberty Head effigy had been on the coins since 1839, with the Indian Head design ending that nearly 70-year run on the $5 gold coin. The $5 Indian Head Half Eagle was struck by the US Mint from 1908 to 1916, canceled throughout the remainder of World War I and most of the Roaring 20s, with a final release struck in 1929.
