The 1921 release of a Morgan Dollar Silver coin into circulation in the United States marked the final issue of the historic Morgan Dollar design. Originally introduced in 1878, the Morgan Dollar design was continuously struck by the US Mint from 1878 to 1904 when authorization to coin silver dollars ended with the depletion of existing stocks of silver. In 1918, Congressional authorization was granted to restart silver dollar coining. The 1921 Morgan Dollar was the result. Right now, you can get certified 1921 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse field of the 1921 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin depicts Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust of Liberty was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan for the debut of the Morgan Dollar Silver coins. Her effigy comes with a coronet with an inscription of Liberty on it, a wreath crown in her hair, 13 stars around the design element, and inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum above her head and 1921 below.

Reverse

On the reverse is George T. Morgans version of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design shows the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with no US heraldic shield but does clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.

History

Morgan Dollars were struck annually from 1878 to 1904 under various congressional acts authorizing the purchase of silver for coining. The last act to authorize silver purchasing stated that when available silver stores were depleted, coining must stop. This occurred in 1904. A new act passed after World War I authorized the melting and re-coining of silver dollars. The resulting release was the 1921 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, the highest-minted silver dollar in history at more than 86 million coins in 1921.
