Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Lady Liberty stands as the most beloved coin design in American history. Originally created at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905, this iconic design made its debut on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907. Now, at Provident Metals, you can find certified 1927 Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins available for purchase online.
All of our 1927 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins are available in Mint State 64 condition. Coins with this grade display average mint luster for their age, with several small contact marks grouped together and one or two moderate marks. Some coins may also have one or two small patches of hairlines.
On the obverse of the 1927 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin, you will discover the striking image of Liberty. She is depicted walking forward, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design also includes the U.S. Capitol Building, rays of light, and a ring of 48 stars. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1927.
The reverse side of the 1927 Pre-33 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coins features a magnificent portrayal of the American bald eagle. The eagle is shown in left-profile relief, soaring through the air as the sun rises from the horizon at the edge of the coin. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and TWENTY DOLLARS.
In 1933, amidst the Great Depression and the ongoing economic crisis, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order prohibiting the hoarding of gold. As a result, the production of gold coins, including the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, was temporarily halted. Nearly all of the 1933 double eagles were ordered to be melted down, except for a few that were saved for numismatic purposes.
