One of the four largest denominations of Federal Reserve Notes ever printed was the $500. Introduced in the 1918 Series with the $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 notes, the $500 note was redesigned in 1934 to feature President William McKinley on the obverse of the note. When you purchase one of these 1934 $500 Federal Reserve Notes online at Provident Metals, the item you receive comes with a Very Fine 25 certification from the PMG. The notes are housed in protective plastic sleeves to protect the condition. At this grade level, notes show modest signs of handling with numerous fold lines and possible soiling. Please note that the District Seals present on the obverse could match or vary if you buy several. The District Seals identify the branch of the Federal Reserve that released the notes into circulation. As an example, you could find notations of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, St. Louis, or Minneapolis printed within these seals.

Obverse

The obverse of 1934 $500 Federal Reserve Notes features an effigy of President William McKinley. President McKinley was the last American president to have served in the US Civil War. He entered the Civil War fighting on behalf of the Union as an enlisted soldier, and by wars end he held the rank of brevet major.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1934 $500 Federal Reserve Note are several notations of the denomination of the note. The four corners feature notations of 500, with the numeric value also present across the center of the note. Other notations include THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS.

History

The 1934 Series redesign removed the image of John Marshall from the obverse and a vignette of Desoto Discovering the Mississippi from the reverse. The redesign brought the images found on the bills in this listing. This was the final time the $500 Federal Reserve was redesigned. In July 1969, the United States began to remove these notes from circulation.
