Even though it was the year after the Bicentennial, the US Mint still sold 3,251,152 of the 1977 Proof Sets! This also was in spite of the fact that the US Mint had raised the price of the sets from $7.00 to $9.00. Even with the price increase, the 3-plus million in sales of the 1977 Proof Set were still above the pre-Bicentennial annual sales. It remains a 6 coin set, with every coin in the set except the Lincoln Cent being a Proof-only issue. The mirror-like Proof finish on the coins enhances their beauty and shine. Each coin in the Proof Set is placed in a separate sealed ring and positioned on a red felt-covered paper insert. The insert is sealed in a two-piece clear plastic case. The clear plastic case is then inserted into a black plastic frame, that opens and closes, and can be used as a stand to display the coins. The beauty and shine of the coins really stand out against the red background.

Obverse

The obverse of the Washington Quarter features a left-facing profile of George Washington. This design was created by John Flanagan, who used a 1786 bust of Washington, sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon, as his inspiration. Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1977.

Reverse

The reverse of the Washington Quarter features an eagle, with its wings outspread, resting on top of a bundle of arrows, framed below by two olive branches. This design was also created by John Flanagan. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR.

History

The 1977 Proof Set comes in the standard Proof Set packaging that has been in use since 1973.

The Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. The quarter, half dollar, and dollar coin reverse designs in the 1977 Proof Sets returned to their traditional designs, after last years bicentennial designs.
