The US Mint sold 3,362,821 of the 1985 Proof Sets. While there were no significant changes to the Proof Sets from 1984 to 1985, the Mint sold over 614,000 more Proof Sets in 1985 than in 1984. With no other obvious reason for this increase, it was presumed to be a result of the lack of a Prestige Set offering for 1985. The 1985 Proof Set was still a 5 coin set, with a face value of $0.91 and an original issue price of $11.00. Most all coins in the Set will be found with deep cameo finishes. The US Mint packaged the 1985 Proof Set in a holder designed for the 5 coins. Each coin is placed into its respective slot on a textured purple cardboard holder, which is then sealed in a plastic case. This case is placed into a purple outer box, which has a flap to be used to slide the case in and out. This packaging design was originally created in 1968 and began being used again in 1983.

Designs

Each Proof Set consists of one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Each of these coins features a profile of the respective President on the obverse. They also each feature their own unique reverse design.

History

In 1983, the US Mint started issuing Prestige Proof Sets. The Prestige Proof Sets contained the 5 coins of the standard Proof Set as well as the Commemorative Silver Dollar and Commemorative Half Dollar for the year. Prestige Proof Sets were offered through 1997. There was one year 1985 when the Mint did not offer a Prestige Proof Set, and that is deemed to be the reason for the sizeable jump in standard Proof Set sales this year.
