The US Mint Sets contain examples of coins that are in circulation, except the coins in the Sets are in brilliant uncirculated condition. They are issued in official government packaging, and their quality and authenticity is beyond reproach. The US Mint produces these coins using base metals, thus they are generally less expensive than Proof Sets of the same year, making them more affordable for collectors or those people wishing to begin collecting. The 1985 Mint Set consists of 10 coins. At this time, Provident Metals is offering the 1985 US Mint Set for purchase online.
Highlights:
The US Mint Sets were not issued in 1982 nor in 1983. When they did resume in 1984, they came in more colorful, redesigned packaging that the US Mint changed slightly each year. Collectors demonstrated some reluctance to purchase the Mint Sets upon their relaunch, reflected by the drop in sales. Sales of Mint Sets in 1981 – prior to the brief interruption were 2,908,145 sets, however, sales in 1984 dropped to 1,832,857 sets and fell even further in 1985 to 1,710,571 sets.
Designs
Each Mint Set contains two packages one package containing 5 coins and a cent-sized token with a D, indicating its from the Denver Mint, and one package containing 5 coins and a cent-sized token with a P, indicating its from the Philadelphia Mint. Each Mints package contains one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.
History
With a few interruptions, the US Mint has been issuing these Mint Sets of uncirculated coins since 1947. While Mint Sets are uncirculated coins of coins that were in circulation, a few Mint Sets contained coins that had not been issued for circulation. The 1970, 1973, and 1981 Mint Sets include dollar coins not issued for circulation, while the 1996 Mint Set included the Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint and issued only in sets. These Mint Sets are of particular interest to collectors.
