The design shows Libertys full-length figure in front-facing relief as she strides forward holding up a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol Building features at her feet with sun rays on the horizon in the background. A ring of 50 stars encircles the design field. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and MCMXXXVII.

Reverse

A family of American bald eagles graces the reverse side of the 1987 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin. This work of art was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek for the exclusive use of the American Eagle Gold Coin Series. This image shows a male eagle returning to the nest with an olive branch as a female eagle guards hatchlings within.
