When the United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program in 1986, there were only two options for weights: 1 oz and 1/2 oz. In subsequent years, the mint released two more fractional weights: 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz, completing the lineup. The mint also releases each weight in three different finish options: bullion, proof, and uncirculated.

The mint has also created American Eagles in three additional metal types: silver, platinum, and palladium. While all four metal types have designs with similar themes, the specific imagery is completely different.

Obverse

The obverse design features Augustus Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty. In his depiction of Lady Liberty, she is seen walking away from the Capitol in Washington D.C. with the sun shining at her back. In one hand, she is holding an olive branch. In the other, she carries a flaming torch. This design is called the Gold Double Eagle, which is the name of the coin it was originally debuted on in 1907.

Reverse

Sculptor Miley Busieks bald eagle family design is on the reverse of these coins. Designed in 1986 just for use on these coins, the image showcases a large male bald eagle as he returns to his family nest with an olive branch. In the image, you can also see a hatchling and female sitting in the nest waiting for the males return.
