One of the most famous and celebrated American coins of all time is the Double Eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, generally thought to be one of the most beautiful American coins ever produced. The U.S. Mint pays annual tribute to the design of that original $20 gold piece with the American Eagle Coin Program, which began issuing coins in 1986 and for much of the series’ run to date combined the classic designs of Saint-Gaudens with the work of modern medallic artist Miley Busiek. The 1994-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin is now available from Provident Metals.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in box packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Issued in 1994, part of the U.S. Mint’s American Eagle Coin Program!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Face value of $25 (USD) backed by the United States government.
  • Obverse side features a rendition of Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design.
  • Reverse side features Miley Busiek’s distinctive bald eagle engravings.

The 1994-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coin boasts a high-quality proof finish with the coin’s full, original and blemish-free luster. It ships fully insured against loss or damage by Provident Metals, secured in box packaging along with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Obverse

The obverse side features Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, an olive branch in her left hand, and a torch in her right hand. She’s accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1994.”

Reverse

The coin’s reverse side shows a male eagle flying back to the nest grasping an olive branch, and a nest below with a female eagle protecting her hatchlings. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with a “W” mint mark.

History

When the American Eagle Coin Program was set in motion by Congressional legislation, the first coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. It wasn’t until 1994, the year this coin was issued, that the West Point Mint would begin to take part in the program, making coins with the “W” mint mark distinctive and particularly valued by collectors. These coins are noted in general for their faithful rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design and for the skill and talent of the modern-day sculptors appearing on their reverse sides.
