The design field is surrounded by a ring of 50 stars. The design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933.

The reverse face of 1995-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins includes the image of a family of American bald eagles. In this design, a male eagle flies over the nest as a female eagle guards a young hatchling in the nest.

History

For the eighth year in a row, the Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin was the second best-selling coin in the series. It was outsold only by the 1/10 oz gold coin in the collection. Its mintage of 47,526 coins in 1995 was roughly 700 coins lower than the previous year, but would prove to be nearly 10,000 coins more than the following year.
