The American Eagle Gold Coin is one of the worlds most popular gold bullion coins. Introduced by the United States Mint in 1986, the series features BU, Proof, and Burnished options. The rollout of the coins over the years included all four BU coins in 1986, a 1 oz proof coin in 1986, fractional-ounce proofs in 1987 and 1988, and a 1 oz burnished coin in 2006. One of the lowest-minted coins in the series is the 1/4 oz Gold Coin. Provident Metals now has 1996 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase a 1996 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin online from Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that is individually packaged in a protective flip. The 1996 coin in the American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Series has one of the lower mintages in the series. It experienced a drop in demand of 23,000 coins from the year before, but was the last issue before the Y2K crisis drove demand to record levels.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1996 American Eagle Gold Coin features a front-facing relief of Lady Liberty. This full-length portrait of Liberty depicts her figure walking toward you with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. There are sun rays on the horizon behind her figure, the U.S. Capitol Building is near her feet, and there is a ring of 50 stars around the design field. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and the date of 1996.
Reverse
On the reverse field of 1996 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins, you will find the 1986 design of a family of bald eagles. Developed by Miley Busiek, this design has been exclusive to the American Eagle Gold Series since its release. It features a male bald eagle soaring over the nest with an olive branch in its talons. Within the nest, you will notice a female eagle with young hatchlings. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.
History
The low mintage in 1996 marked a temporary downturn in demand for the coins. In 1997, the 1/4 oz gold coin, as well as the other weights, would see a dramatic uptick in demand during the Y2K crisis. Just three years later in 1999, the 1/4 oz coin would hit its second-highest mintage at 564,232.
