The Double Eagle, a $20 gold piece that circulated in international trade from 1907 until 1933, was one of the most celebrated American coins ever issued. Obverse

Reverse

The coin’s reverse side features a male eagle flying back to the nest carrying an olive branch, and the nest below him with a female eagle protecting her hatchlings. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with a “W” mint mark.

History

Congress set the American Eagle Coin Program in motion in the mid-Eighties, and the first eight issues in the series would be struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The West Point Mint began to strike coins as part of the program in 1994, and coins with the “W” mint mark indicating this are particularly valued for their distinctiveness.
