The Double Eagle, a $20 gold piece that circulated in international trade from 1907 until 1933, was one of the most celebrated American coins ever issued. Designed by the famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this achievement in numismatics has been celebrated annually by the U.S. Mint through the American Eagle Coin Program, which began issuing coins in 1986. The series combined the classic designs of Saint-Gaudens with the work of modern medallic artists, as is the case with the 1996-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin now available from Provident Metals.
The 1996-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coin features a high-quality proof finish that preserves the coin’s full and original luster with a blemish-free surface. Each shipment is fully insured against any possible loss or damage by Provident Metals and arrives secured in box packaging along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The obverse side features a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty, pictured with flowing locks, an olive branch in her left hand, and a torch in her right. She’s accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1994.”
The coin’s reverse side features a male eagle flying back to the nest carrying an olive branch, and the nest below him with a female eagle protecting her hatchlings. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with a “W” mint mark.
Congress set the American Eagle Coin Program in motion in the mid-Eighties, and the first eight issues in the series would be struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The West Point Mint began to strike coins as part of the program in 1994, and coins with the “W” mint mark indicating this are particularly valued for their distinctiveness. The American Eagle series in general is known for its faithful rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ extraordinary designs, paired with the work of modern medallic artists of equally extraordinary talent on the coins’ reverse sides.
