Obverse
For the obverse of the 1997 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin, the Royal Canadian Mint features the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. This image was created in 1990 by Dora de Pedery-Hunt to serve as the third-generation effigy of the Queen on Canadian coins. Notably, this is the first design of Elizabeth II by a Canadian artist. Inscriptions on this side read ELIZABETH II, 50 DOLLARS, and 1997.
Reverse
In the reverse design of 1997 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins, you will find the sugar maple leaf. The only image of the maple leaf ever used in this series, this front-facing, detailed sugar maple leaf was created in 1979 by Walter Ott and has been used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf used in the decades since. History
The 1997 release marked a significant uptick in demand compared to 1996. More importantly, it was the first of three years in a row in which mintage figures in the Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Series grew. Much of this increased demand was driven by the concerns surrounding the potential Y2K crisis.
