Obverse

Inscriptions on the obverse of the coin read LIBERTY and 1998. The image on this side of the coin is of Lady Liberty striding forward in front of the capitol building, which is shown in the lower left of the background. The sun rays that often accompany Liberty rise up behind her, and she carries the symbolic torch and olive branch normally associated with her. Along the border, 50 stars signify the 50 states of the nation. The design is a restored version of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ work for the early 20th-century double eagle gold coins.

Reverse

Inscriptions on the reverse spell out all the details associated with the coin. They include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS. At the center of the inscriptions is an image designed by Miley Busiek Forest. It includes the national bird the bald eagle in its nest with a youngling. A male eagle is flying into the nest. Like Lady Liberty, he is carrying the symbolic olive branch, which signifies peace.

Packaging

Coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip, which you can use for continued safekeeping if you like.

History

The American Eagle Program was launched by the U.S. Mint in 1986 and has become a fan favorite. For the first 25 years of the program, the images on the obverse and reverse stayed the same for each year of minting on both gold and silver coins though the images were not the same across both metal types. Legally, the mint can only make changes to the designs every 25 years, and in 2021, it did opt to replace the Miley Busiek Frost image.
