Obverse

For the obverse design of these $2 Buffalo Legal Tender Notes, the authentic US legal tender design of President Thomas Jefferson has been covered with a high-definition replica of the classic 1901 $10 Bison Note design. At the center of the design element is a depiction of the American bison in its natural environment on the American Plains. The portrait of the massive, shaggy beast is flanked by Meriwether Lewis on the left side of the bill and William Clark on the right side of the bill.

Reverse

In the reverse field of $2 Buffalo Legal Tender Notes is the original design for the $2 Federal Reserve Note. This design offers a portrait of the Founding Fathers at the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Originally created in 1818 by John Trumbull, the design has been on the reverse of the modern $2 Federal Reserve Note since it was introduced in 1976.

History

The 1901 $10 Bison Note that inspired this design on these collectible $2 legal tender notes was issued on the $10 United States Note of the era. As of 2021, the United States Note series of paper currency remains the longest-running paper money program in the United States, having been in production and circulation from 1862 to 1971, a period that includes concurrent overlap with the modern Federal Reserve Notes issued as of 1914.
