There is no understating the importance of the 1899 release of the $5 silver certificate. With the release of this particular denomination of paper money, the United States featured for the first time on its paper money the effigy of a Native American tribal figure. The popular silver certificate was short-lived, but you can recapture its glory in a new $2 legal tender US note. Provident Metals currently offers the $2 Native American Legal Tender Note to you for purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a bi-fold blue folio and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Real US legal tender notes!
  • Colorized imagery added to the obverse field.
  • Issued a face value of $2 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • The obverse depicts Running Antelope in place of President Thomas Jefferson.
  • On the reverse is a work of art based on the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

When you purchase one of these $2 Native American Legal Tender Notes at Provident Metals, you are buying a $2 US bill that is real legal tender in the United States. Each one has been modified with the latest imaging technology to feature colorized fields on the obverse and a different portrait in place of President Thomas Jefferson. The notes shown here are available with a bi-fold blue folio that houses the $2 bill on the right and a Certificate of Authenticity on the left.

Obverse

The obverse of the $2 Native American Legal Tender Note comes with a bust of Running Antelope that has been superimposed over the traditional bust of President Jefferson. This Running Antelope portrait is more than a century old and was first used by the United States Mint with the release of the 1899 $5 Silver Certificate. It depicts the leader of the Hunkpapa tribe, a band of Lakota indigenous people. Running Antelope was chosen one of four shirt wearers for the tribe in 1851 and would go on to become a feared warrior and skilled diplomat for his people.

Reverse

On the reverse side of $2 Native American Legal Tender Notes is the depiction that has graced the Federal Reserve Note since 1976. This work of art dates to 1818 and was originally created by John Trumbull.

History

These $2 Native American Legal Tender Notes are genuine $2 US bills that have been enhanced with the image of Running Antelope from the 1899 $5 Silver Certificate. His effigy featured on the silver certificate series of paper money for that one year, becoming the first and only indigenous figure to feature on US paper money. As for the man his effigy replaces on this legal tender note, President Thomas Jefferson has been on the $2 denomination of paper money since 1928. His effigy was on the United States Note from 1928 to 1966 and revived in 1976 for the release of the modern $2 Federal Reserve Note.
