Obverse
On the obverse of this Buddhist Stele of Amitabha Gichuk Silver Bar, there is a depiction of the Buddha in a sitting position. Buddha was an influential spiritual leader who taught about the path toward Nirvana, the escape from suffering through an enlightened understanding of experience. This carving also features a pond with lotus flowers and several standing Buddha figures. Additional characters include the disciple Arhat, the spirit Yachasang, and various Bodhisattvas.
Reverse
The reverse side of these 2 oz Buddhist Stele of Amitabha Silver Bars features a blank but textured surface. This rough quality nicely mimics the appearance of the original stone out of which this stele was carved. It is also worth noting that the overall shape of this stele differs from other versions due to the arching, curved shape as we move up the design.
History
The original stele on which this bar is based was produced sometime during the Unified Silla Period (668-935 AD). This age received its name due to the union of three kingdoms of the Korean peninsula: Silla, Paekche, and Koguryo. The stele is recognized today as a National Treasure of South Korea.
