The phrase molon labe translates as come and take them, and is rumored to have first been uttered in battle by King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae. America has its own history with this phrase as feisty Texans challenged the Mexican Army to come and take it when Mexico wanted the Gonzales cannon back from the Texans. This phrase is the focus of a design series from Intaglio Mint. Today, you can purchase the 2 oz Silver Molon Labe Type V Round online from Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse field of the 2 oz Silver Molon Labe Type V Round includes a chaotic battle scene at the Spartan lines during the Battle of Thermopylae. The Spartans fought a defensive battle frustrating the advancing Persians by holding their ground through three days of intense battle. In this scene, a Spartan with an arrow in his thigh emerges from behind his lines to take the fight directly to the Persians. Despite his wound, he wields a broken spear and grasps his enemy by the neck as he prepares to thrust the spear into the Persian.

Reverse

For the reverse of 2 oz Silver Molon Labe Type V Rounds, the Intaglio Mint features its own logo in the center of a radial sunburst background. That logo is in the shape of a Roman column that looks just like the capital letter I. The outermost design field has a hammered finish with the weight, purity, and metal content noted.

History

Intaglio Mints Molon Labe Series offers a range of designs that focus on the three-day Battle of Thermopylae. Fought in late summer of 480 BC, King Leonidas led a modest force against the 150,000-man Persian Army with the hopes of delaying them long enough for the other Greek city-states to amass a larger army. When Xerxes I offered Leonidas a chance to live if he laid down his arms, the Spartan king responded by telling the Persian leader if he wanted his mens weapons, he would have to come and take them.
