Thomas Jefferson is featured on the obverse of $2 World War II Vintage Marines Legal Tender Notes. This is the standard portrait of Jefferson found on $2 billsexcept that a colorized American flag has been added to the background. Other enhancements on the obverse include the six Marines hoisting a flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima and a watermark of the official US Marines emblem.

Reverse

A rendition of the 1818 painting known as Declaration of Independence features on the reverse of $2 United States Marines Legal Tender Notes. This painting was completed by John Trumbull in 1818 and showcases the Founding Fathers presenting a draft of the Declaration to John Hancock. Members of Congress are shown in the background observing the event.

History

The image by Joe Rosenthal of six Marines raising a flag atop Mount Suribachi is considered an American masterpiece. However, Rosenthal barely captured the moment. The photographer had climbed to the summit to capture the scene and decided to build a pile of rocks for a better viewpoint. This proved unwise, as the Marines had already begun to hoist the flag. Rosenthal was forced to swing up his camera and blindly take a shot without even using the viewfinder. Miraculously, the composition was nearly flawless.
