From its original introduction date until 1964, the US Quarter Dollar coin had 90% silver content. Today, you can still find examples of this denomination available to purchase as so-called junk silver. This is simply a term that refers to former circulation coins that have no numismatic value, but still retain the metallic value based on precious metal content. Today, you have the chance to get $200 Face Values of 90% Silver Quarters online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
When the US quarter was originally introduced, it was a silver coin with 90% silver content. This continued through every design in the series until the Washington Quarter in 1965. The Washington Quarter debuted in 1932 and is still the design of choice in the series, but as of 1965 the series no longer uses 90% silver content with a 10% copper balance. As of 1965, the coins have a new cupro-nickel alloy.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the 90% Silver Quarters in this $200 Face Value allotment, you will find a variety of designs. The most likely images to find are the Barber Coinage, Standing Liberty, and Washington Quarter designs. The Barber Coinage featured Liberty in right-profile relief and was available from 1892 to 1916. Standing Liberty was a unique image with Liberty standing guard between the gaps in the wall and was used from 1916 to 1930. Since 1932, the left-profile bust of President George Washington has featured on the obverse of the quarter.
Reverse
As with the obverse, the reverse of 90% Silver Quarters offers varying images of the American bald eagle. In most cases, the heraldic eagle of the United States is featured in one design or another from the US Mint. The Standing Liberty Quarter used its own unique American bald eagle design.
History
The Washington Quarter is the longest-running design in the quarter series. Assuming the image remains on the quarter through 2032, it will have been on the coin for 100 years and will survive until the 300th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. The Standing Liberty Quarter was intricate, but ultimately unpopular. It featured on the quarter from 1916 to 1930, the shortest run of any design, and was so unpopular the US Mint suspended the quarter for a year in 1931 before replacing it with the Washington design.
