The Perth Mint in Australia has a clear reputation for creating some of the most beautiful lunar calendar-themed coins in the world. The Lunar Series from Perth Mint has transformed into one of the most varied collections in the world. Collectors have numerous size options, but the 1 oz is still one of the most popular coins. Right now, you can purchase the 2002 Australian Lunar Horse 1 oz Gold Coin in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic capsule!
  • 7th release in the Perth Mints Lunar Series collection!
  • Each coin contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Given a $100 (AUD) face value by the Australian government.
  • Obverse features the image of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Year of the Horse design on the reverse.

In 1996, Perth Mint launched the first-ever lunar-themed coin collection. The original series included all 12 years of the Zodiac. The Year of the Horse was the seventh design released in the original series. Each of the coins in this series has a 1 oz silver bullion counterpart as well. However, the silver coins have different designs, making the coins even more collectible.

Obverse

The obverse of each 2002 Australian Lunar Horse 1 oz Gold Coin has the image of Queen Elizabeth II. She is featured in right-profile relief in a design created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This is the fourth-generation design of the Queens effigy, and it has been featured on coinage since 1998.

Reverse

The reverse image on each 2002 Australian Lunar Horse 1 oz Gold Coin is that of a powerful mustang. The horse is seen trotting in an open space. Around the horse, you will notice a beaded circle. The year of issue, weight, purity, and metal content is shown on the reverse along with the Chinese symbol for Horse.

History

The Perth Mint is the oldest operating minting facility in Australia. The mint was originally opened in 1899 by the Royal Mint as the third and final facility on the continent. However, the Perth Mint outlasted both the Sydney and Melbourne Mints.
