The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 required the US Mint to produce and issue 22 karat gold coins in $50, $25, $10, and $5 denominations. The gold for these coins was required to be mined from deposits in the US or US territories, and be used within one year after the month the ore was mined. It was also stipulated that any profit from the sale of such coins be applied towards reducing the national debt. This Act led to the formation of the American Eagle Gold Bullion Program and the production of the American Eagle Gold coins. In 2003, the US Mint produced 79,029 1/2 oz Gold Eagle coins. Presently, Provident Metals has the 2003 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold coin available for purchase.

In the early 2000s, the price of gold began its climb that would eventually last twelve consecutive years. In 2002, the price surpassed the $300 per ounce mark. In 2003, it then crossed the $400 per ounce mark. Even though early in 2003, the price of gold per ounce dipped below the $400 mark, it rebounded to finish the year at $416.25 per ounce. This was an increase of more than 21% over the 2002 closing price.

Obverse

The obverse of the American Eagle Gold coin depicts the full length figure Lady Liberty design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. She appears to be walking right out of the coin. Her hair is flowing in the breeze, and she is holding a torch in her extended right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. To the left of her right foot is a small depiction of the Capitol building. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2003.

Reverse

The reverse of the American Eagle Gold coin depicts a male eagle, with an olive branch in its claws, flying towards a nest with an eagle family. This design is the creation of Miley Busiek and was sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. It is said to illustrate the unity and family tradition of America. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

In 1904, without asking Congress, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned new designs for US coins, as he felt they had become artistically bland. He invited the very skilled Irish-born Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a design that would return beauty to our US coins. Saint-Gaudens accepted the invitation and created the Lady Liberty designs that appeared on the Eagle ($10) and the Double Eagle ($20) gold coins. It is a version of this Lady Liberty that now appears on the American Eagle Gold coins.
