This quarter set features designs that have been specially minted in 90% silver. The mint also struck these coins with a special proof finish that gives each coin a beautiful mirrorlike appearance.

The Statehood quarters series began in 1999 and ran through 2008. Each year, five new designs were released to showcase the originality of each state. The coins were released from the mint in the same order in which the states were ratified or added to the Union. The states included in the 2005 Statehood quarters set include California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia.

Designs

The design on the obverse of each quarter is that of President George Washington, the first president of the United States. The bust will look familiar, as it is featured on all standard circulation quarters. The reverse designs vary by state, which each design showcasing the things that make that state special. A few common elements across each quarter include the name of the state, the year it became a state, year of the release, and the phrase E Pluribus Unum.

On the reverse of the California quarter, you will find conservationist John Muir standing at Yosemite Valley. The Minnesota quarter features the image of a loon on a lake surrounded by trees along with the outline of the state with the phrase Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Oregon quarter shows the image of Crater Lake. On the rear side of the Kansas quarter, there is an image of a bison with sunflowers, the state animal and flower. West Virginias quarter features the image of the New River Gorge bridge over the New River Gorge.
