John Mercantis heraldic eagle remains the centerpiece of the reverse design of the 2006-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coin. This design was originally created in 1794 by Robert Scot and was modernized for this series in 1986 by Mercanti.

History

These mintage figures represent the second-largest in program history. The bullion version marked the second-highest, following 1987, while the Proof American Silver Eagle reached its highest production since its debut issue in 1986. This spike in proof production stands as the largest one-year increase in the programs 30-year history.
