The American Buffalo Gold coin series, introduced in 2006, are the first and only .9999 pure gold coins produced by the US Mint. Their weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the US government, making them investment-grade coins. They are offered in both Bullion and Proof versions, and with few exceptions, are offered only in 1 ounce size. They are struck at the West Point Mint. Provident Metals has the 2007 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold coin available for purchase right now.
Highlights:
The price of gold was $639.75 per ounce at the beginning of 2007. By late May, when the Buffalo Gold Proof coins were first offered, the price of gold had already risen to $661.30 per ounce. The price of gold zoomed upwards from that point, finally finishing the year at $833.75 per ounce. To find an increase larger than this 31% would require you to look back to 1979.
Obverse
The obverse of the American Buffalo Gold coin features the Native American Chief design created by James Earle Fraser for the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel. The Chief profile is believed to actually be a composite of 3 Chiefs: Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota. This design originally appeared on the Buffalo Nickel, which circulated from 1913 to 1938, and is known to collectors as Frasers 1913, Type I design. The Buffalo Nickel, with the Native American Chief obverse, quickly became one of our best-loved circulating coins. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2007.
Reverse
The reverse of the American Buffalo coin features the American Buffalo design created by James Earle Fraser for the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel. The buffalo profile is believed to be that of Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo, the largest American buffalo held in captivity at the time. The law that authorized the production of the Gold Buffalos stipulated that Frasers Buffalo Nickel designs also be used on the Gold Buffalos. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and $50.
History
Title II of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 authorized the production of the first and only one ounce .9999 pure gold coins by the US Mint. This resulted in the American Buffalo Gold $50 coins, offered in both bullion and proof condition. The Act also stipulated that the obverse and reserve designs of the Buffalo Gold coins be the James Earle Fraser obverse and reverse designs from the Buffalo Nickel. These 24 karat gold coin offerings from the US were meant to allow the US to compete with the 24 karat gold coin offerings from other countries, such as Canada and China. The American Buffalo Gold coins are struck at the West Point Mint, however, the bullion coins have no mint mark.
