History

Designed to commemorate, as comprehensively as possible, the spouses of American Presidents from the nation’s founding through the year 1993, the First Spouse Gold Coin Program made use of Lady Liberty as a kind of symbolic spouse in periods when the sitting President was unmarried. The first such was Thomas Jefferson, almost two decades a widower when he came to the White House, and the First Spouse coin for his administration established the practice of drawing on coinage issued in his day for its presentation of the Lady. In this case, the inspiration came from the Draped Bust Half-Cent coin designed by Robert Scot, a famous engraver of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with a modern rendition executed by the prolific modern-day medallic artist Phebe Hemphill.
