This design was created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser and featured on the obverse of the coins from 1913 to 1938. Inscriptions on this side include Liberty, 2008, W, and F, with the latter initial for James Earle Fraser.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2008 Burnished American Buffalo Gold Coin includes a left-profile relief of an American bison. Fraser also created this design in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel and used Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo, for his inspiration.
