Obverse

The obverse face of the 2008-W Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin comes with an image of Walking Liberty. The design was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman for the US Mint and featured on the US half dollar until 1947. It depicts Liberty in left-profile relief walking toward the sunshine of new day and a brighter future.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 2008-W Burnished American Eagle Silver Coins is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This is the most recent modification of the national emblem and connects the 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Robert Scot, to the 12th Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. Mr. Scot created the first-ever version of the heraldic eagle in 1794 and Mr. Mercanti offered the latest modernization of the iconic emblem in 1986 for the debut of the American Eagle Silver Coins.

History

The Burnished American Eagle Silver Coin was introduced in 2006 by the United States Mint as part of the 20th-anniversary celebration of the series. These 2008 coins are special not only for the perfect certification, but also for the uniqueness of its date mark. This was the last issue of the burnished coin before a two-year hiatus in 2009 and 2010. Its overall mintage of 533,757 coins remains second-best in the series to date as the return of the coins in 2011 has failed to see demand surge as high as the original 2006-2008 issues.
