The modern depiction shown here comes from John Mercanti and was created in 1986 for use on the American Eagle Silver Coins. It shows the bald eagle with the national shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. Above its head, 13 stars are arranged in a tight, triangular cluster to reflect the original colonies.

History
