The 2010 release year was the first time America the Beautiful coins were offered by the United States Mint. These impressive silver bullion coins debuted with the Hot Springs National Park coin and included a total of five designs for the year. Each subsequent year in the series offered five fresh designs as well. Among those first five designs in 2010 was the Mount Hood National Forest coin for Oregon. 62 miles east of the city of Portland lies the Mount Hood National Forest protected site. The park itself is 60 miles wide and preserves more than 1 million acres of land that includes dense forests, several rivers, a high lake basin, and the stratovolcano for which the park is named, Mount Hood.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2010-P Burnished ATB Mount Hood 5 oz Silver Coin is the left-profile bust of President George Washington. This effigy was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for the US quarter. It replaced the Standing Liberty quarter design and has featured on the quarter since that time. Flanagans bust of the president was modified for use on this much larger blank.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 2010 Burnished ATB Mount Hood 5 oz Silver Coin captures a truly scenic view from the forests of Mount Hood National Forest. Trekking through the woods of the national park, you will eventually come to the shores of Lost Lake. As you stand along the shores of Lost Lake, you are afforded a breathtaking view of Mount Hood in the distance.

History

The America the Beautiful Series is slated to run from 2010 to 2021 at the United States Mint.
